An Ethical Approach to Resume Building

Have you ever found yourself in a situation as a jobseeker where you were faced with a difficult decision concerning your resume experience?

What I mean is needing to address employment gaps or limited educational experience. Perhaps you may have been told that just having an extra course or knowledge in a particular area would lead you to securing an interview.

Here’s the reality. Every candidate may experience career-related concerns or challenges to some degree -- whether that it entails frequent career changes or limited work experience in a certain area. However, compromising your integrity for the sake of enhancing your credibility will not lead you to securing a job offer. When crafting a resume, ethics and integrity play a large role. All the content presented on a resume must be 100% accurate and truthful.

The Implications of Inaccuracies on Your Resume

There are ways to address employment gaps and other career-related obstacles with best resume practices. However, inflating your level of expertise, or stretching dates to mitigate potential ageism or employment gaps is not recommended. Inaccurate information may be uncovered by your references, at the interview, or during your job performance. If the employer finds out, that could be cause for questioning or termination. It could also hinder the reputation that you have worked hard to establish.

Your resume is a valuable marketing tool. It needs to portray an honest reflection of your offerings and experience.

The brand “YOU” is behind your resume and must be presented authentically.

As a Certified Resume Strategist, it is my responsibility to represent the qualifications of my clients candidly without overstating their qualifications or featuring inappropriate outcomes.
